The color palette for this piece was pulled from a landscape I did years ago of a summer meadow. The muted colors, marks and layered textures represent the tangle of grasses, bushes and plants creating a colorful tapestry across the meadow.

A large part of my work involves experimentation. I am always looking to explore a new idea or technique to create unique marks. In this piece, I started by pressing moulding paste through a piece of lace to create a raised pattern, which I later painted over. I further explored a limited palette of two colors plus black and white that I used in a previous piece. In the end, I thought some of the marks suggested a western motif.

Working with a limited palette of just two colors plus black and white, these colors represent calm to me. I wanted something that would appear soothing and tranquil, so I simplified the design and eliminated any extraneous texture and noise to create a quiet feeling.

This piece was inspired by Autumn leaves — their intense colors, transitioning from green to yellows, oranges, reds and browns; their playful fall to earth, as they carpet the ground in a colorful but fleeting blanket.

An unsuccessful start took a turn in an entirely different direction, becoming the base layer for this oil & cold wax piece. It is an exploration in mark making, shapes formed intuitively and revealed by lifting them from the top layer or stamping on top.

They look to me like hieroglyphics, or characters from an ancient language alphabet. I have always been interested in typography, calligraphy, old handwriting, and asemic writing. Letterforms can be seen simply as shapes, with or without a literal meaning.

This piece was inspired by events occurring with a passing storm. White fluffy clouds can turn dark gray in a matter of moments, then when the storm has passed, the light is revealed and blue skies return. There is hope in the brighter days ahead. I’m not trying to describe these thoughts in a literal way, but letting them come through intuitively as the painting evolves. Many layers were added to create the luminosity and translucent quality of clouds with nuanced color, value and texture. Mark making was utilized to suggest movement as wind and clouds create an ever-changing landscape.

My favorite subject matter to paint has always been winter scenes. While looking back over the many traditional snow scenes I’d done, I saw that although they were different, many shared a similar palette of muted colors reflected in the snow, deep red bushes, and dark browns of bare trees and ground. My paintings often start with an idea, and a limited color palette, before evolving into an abstract composition.

This piece was inspired by some sea stones I picked up on the beach. I was enamored by the limited palette of colors in these stones; tones of white and gray, a dark terra-cotta clay color and speckled grays and rust. The patterns and textures were interesting, too and were on my mind as I applied layer upon layer of oil & cold wax.

I have been noticing some related imagery in some of the intuitive paintings I have been doing. Sometimes shapes appear that look like maps — land and sea masses. The more I look, the more I see connections between the shapes, like pathways, roads, overpasses, bridges, rest stops, detours, etc. — a metaphor for life’s journey.

The greens of summer can sometimes be overwhelming for an artist. When you paint what you see, they can become too neon green, like the color of a freshly mowed lawn. I wanted to focus more on the more natural, or neutral greens, such as the color sage. Sage is a gray green, and I was surprised at the variation in the perception of the color sage. The color shifts towards blue and yellow, with a bit of reddish orange for contrast, add to the visual appeal.

This piece was inspired by a bookmark I made from a scrap of paper used to practice oil & cold wax techniques. Each time I pulled out the bookmark to read, I became enamored by the totally random marks and colors, which were unlike any I would have chosen in a planned piece. In making a painting from the bookmark, I had to analyze how each layer was put down, which was challenging and nearly impossible to replicate exactly, yet I feel the final piece captures the essence of my favorite bookmark.

This painting was a turning point in my work, the first truly non-objective piece in my evolution from traditional painting — landscapes from life or photos, to remembered landscapes, to abstracted landscapes, to non-objective abstracts.

Accepted AOY Art Center Annual Juried Show 2020

This piece is about History. I began with a photo transfer of a 1775 land sale document I picked up at a flea market. It is an agreement between William Gano and Jacob Holcomb for the sale of farmland in Hunterdon County, NJ. The Holcomb family were early settlers of Lambertville, NJ. I combined the old handwriting with asemic writing, building layers and then scratching into them to reveal the underlying history of the piece. History was on my mind and became a natural theme in this piece. I had recently seen the play Hamilton, was thinking about the Constitution and created this piece on Election Day, hence the title.

This piece was inspired by the colors of autumn leaves, the fiery reds and oranges contrasting with the dark browns. It was painted all prima (in one session) with intuitive mark making techniques to try and capture the energy of those fleeting days.
